Core concepts
What is Event tracking?
Recording specific user interactions (clicks, form submits, video plays, purchases) as named events with parameters, rather than just page views.
Definition
Event tracking captures discrete user interactions — a form submit, an add-to-cart, a video play, a purchase — as named events, each carrying parameters (value, currency, item ID) that give the action meaning.
In GA4, events are the fundamental unit of measurement: every interaction, including page views, is an event. Some events are marked as key events (formerly "conversions") because they represent business outcomes.
Why it matters for agencies
Events are where the business value lives. Getting the event taxonomy right — consistent names, the right parameters, the correct events flagged as key events — is what makes a client’s analytics answer real questions instead of just counting sessions.
Inconsistent event naming across a portfolio is a silent tax: every cross-client report needs manual reconciliation. Agencies that standardize events once and apply the standard per client compound that work.
Event tracking in Phloz
Phloz’s GA4 property node captures the measurement IDs and conversion/key-event configuration, and the audit engine flags a GA4 property with no measurement IDs and half-mapped conversion actions — the gaps that mean events aren’t actually reaching the platform.
Frequently asked questions
- What’s the difference between an event and a conversion?
- A conversion (GA4 calls them key events) is an event you’ve flagged as a business outcome. Every conversion is an event; not every event is a conversion. The distinction drives which numbers show up in optimization and reporting.
- Should I use GA4 recommended events or custom events?
- Use recommended events where one fits (they unlock built-in reports and platform features) and custom events for genuinely unique interactions. Inventing a custom event where a recommended one exists is the most common avoidable mistake.
